True lakes lie completely surrounded by land and are not part of any ocean.  In both Ireland and Scotland, a lake may also be called a “loch.” Of course, this explains where the Loch Ness Monster got her name. Lakes can be natural, but they may also be artificial, constructed by man for various purposes.
